The 72-Hour Rule: How do you stop yourself from clicking “Buy”?
We have all been there. It’s late at night. You are scrolling on your phone. You see an ad for a gadget you didn’t know existed five minutes ago. Suddenly, you need it.
The marketing companies are smart. They make it easy. One click. Apple Pay. Done.
To fight this, I use the 72-Hour Rule. If I want something that costs more than $50, I put it in my cart… and then I close the tab. I have to wait 3 days.
If I still want it 3 days later, I can buy it. But 90% of the time? I forget about it completely. The “need” disappears.
What is your trick?
The Barrier: Do you delete your credit card info so you have to type it in manually?
The Math: Do you calculate how many hours you have to work to pay for it? (e.g., “This shirt costs me 4 hours of work.”)
The Accountability: Do you have to ask your spouse first?
